Prof. Ion Stanciu, Doctor Honoris Causa, was the first director of „Grigore Gafencu” Research Center from 2004 to 2011. He is professor and doctoral supervisor of Romanian and European Modern History at Valahia University of Târgovişte. Doctor in History of the Institute of History ‘Nicolae Iorga’ of Bucharest from 1982 with the dissertation entitled ”Aliati fara alianta. Romania si Statele Unite (1914-1920)” [Allies without alliance. Romania and the United States: 1914-1920]. Researcher in the Institute of History ‘Nicolae Iorga’ of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest from 1969. IREX and Fulbright research fellow in the United States (1973-1974, 1978, 1985, 1988). He has organized many projects and published nine books on the history of the relations between the United States of America and Romania from the early contacts in the 19th century to 1939, the history of the US relations with Central and Eastern Europe during the inter-war period, the modern and contemporary history of Romania, including economic history.
