Bicentenary of the Greek Revolution (1821)

Bicentenary of the Greek Revolution of 1821, marked by an exceptional scientific event at Valahia University of Targoviste 

Valahia University of Targoviste will host on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, starting with 11:00, the seminar entitled “Bicentenary of the Greek Revolution of 1821”, given by Professor Emeritus Paschalis M. Kitromilides from the University of Athens, member since 2020 of the prestigious Athens Academy. 

Personality of international scientific life, former professor at Harvard (USA), Cambridge and Oxford (UK), École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris (France), European University Institute Florence (Italy), academician Paschalis M. Kitromilides specializes in modern history, history of ideas, political and cultural history, being the author of essential works and treatises on the history of Europe, the history of Southeast Europe and the history of Greece, such as The Enlightenment as Social Criticism. Iosipos Moisiodax and Greek Culture in the Eighteenth Century (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1992), An Orthodox Commonwealth. Symbolic Legacies and Cultural Encounters in Southeastern Europe (Variorum Collected Studies Series, Ashgate, 2007), From Republican Polity to National Community. Reconsiderations of Enlightenment Political Thought (Voltaire Foundation, 2003), Adamantios Korais and the European Enlightenment (Voltaire Foundation, 2010), Eleftherios Venizelos. The works entitled “The Greek Revolution. A Critical Dictionary ”, Harvard University Press, 2021 and “The Greek Revolution in the Age of Revolutions (1776-1848): Reappraisals and Comparisons ”, Routledge, 2021 represent the latest scientific productions in the international literature and have academician Paschalis M. Kitromilides,the  guest of the Valahia University of Târgoviște, “Grigore Gafencu” Research Center for the History of International Relations and Cultural Studies and the Department of History, as editor and co-author. 

The event moderated by prof. Univ. Dr. habil. Silviu Miloiu, vice-rector for institutional development and international relations of UVT, is meant to mark the bicentenary of the Greek Revolution of 1821, but also to evoke the movement of Tudor Vladimirescu, who tragically ended his life in Târgoviște, but hastened the process of modernization and political rebirth of the Romanian countries. At the same time, it prefaces two other scientific manifestations that will focus on the events of 1821 and their episode in Targoviste.

Universitatea „Valahia” din Târgoviște va găzdui miercuri, 19 mai 2021, începând cu ora 11:00, seminarul cu titlul „Bicentenarul Revoluției Grecești de la 1821”, susținut de Profesorul emerit Paschalis M. Kitromilides de la Universitatea din Atena, membru din anul 2020 al prestigioasei Academii de la Atena. Personalitate a vieții științifice internaționale, fost profesor la universitățile din Harvard (Statele Unite), Cambridge și Oxford (Marea Britanie), École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris (Franța), European University Institute Florence (Italia), academicianul Paschalis M. Kitromilides este specializat în istoria modernă, istoria ideilor, istoria concepțiilor politice și istoria culturală, fiind autorul unor lucrări și tratate esențiale de istoria Europei, istoria sud-estului european și istoria Greciei, precum The Enlightenment as Social Criticism. Kitromilides, invitatul Universității „Valahia” din Târgoviște, al Centrului de Cercetare a Istoriei Relațiilor Internaționale și Studiilor Culturale „Grigore Gafencu” și al Departamentului de Istorie al universității.Evenimentul moderat de prof. univ. dr. habil. Silviu Miloiu, prorector pentru dezvoltare instituțională și relații internaționale al U.V.T., este menit să marcheze bicentenarul Revoluției grecești de la 1821, dar și să evoce mișcarea lui Tudor Vladimirescu, care și-a sfârșit existența, în mod tragic, la Târgoviște, dar care a grăbit procesul de modernizare și renaștere politică a țărilor române. Totodată, acesta prefațează alte două manifestări științifice care se vor concentra asupra evenimentelor anului 1821 și episodului târgoviștean al acestora.
